Pilot transfer operation: A safer step aboard

Article Pilot transfer operation: A safer step aboard

by Kristin Urdahl, Gard AS - published today

Safe pilot transfer operations depend on both correct procedures and fit-for-purpose equipment. New SOLAS requirements entering into force in 2028 will introduce mandatory performance standards for pilot transfer arrangements, and some existing installations may require physical modifications. Ship operators should start a fleet-wide review of their arrangements now.

Video This Maritime School in England Teaches Harbour Pilots Expert Ship-Handling Skills On A Lake!

published on 28 October 2026

I’ve wanted to visit the Warsash Maritime School ship-handling centre since before I ever set foot on a ship. It’s visited by pilots from all over the world for the kind of specialist training, realistic simulations and real-world expertise you rarely get elsewhere.
As a Tug Master, I handle ships by pulling and pushing them around, so to see these intricate manoeuvres using only the ships equipment really fascinated me.
I can’t thank all the instructors, Warsash and Solent uni enough for...

Safehaven Marine: Pilot 60 & Pilot 45 rough weather sea trials

Video Safehaven Marine: Pilot 60 & Pilot 45 rough weather sea trials

published on 20 October 2026

Sometimes we’re lucky enough to launch two pilot boats around the same time, giving us the opportunity to undertake rough weather sea trials with them together, and capture some great drone footage of them running alongside. This time we flew two drones from the boat at the same time with both Kenny and my son Jack flying them, which was pretty cool and luckily they didn’t crash into each other!

What is the right job title for a pilot?
In English the term "pilot" can be misunderstood, because a "pilot" could also be the captain of an airplane. The terms "Marine Pilot" or "Maritime Pilot" describe more precisely that the pilot of a ship and not of an aircraft is meant. If we only write "pilot" on our page, then we always mean the pilot of a vessel.
