La Nouvelle-Calédonie, notamment la Grande Terre, a la particularité d'être complètement entourée par un lagon, seules quelques passes rendent son accès possible aux navires venant de l'étranger. La navigation maritime y est délicate car une bonne connaissance de la topologie des fonds sous-marins est indispensable. Tous les bateaux de commerces de plus de 60 m voulant accoster en Nouvelle-Calédonie doivent impérativement faire appel aux services des pilotes maritimes de Nouvelle-Calédonie, qui pilotent eux-mêmes les portes-containers, les minéraliers et les bateaux de croisières, depuis les passes autorisées jusqu'à leur port d'accostage à leur arrivée, et dans le sens contraire à leur départ. Ainsi la sécurité et la protection de notre lagon contre les accidents maritimes est garantie. Entre Terre et Mer les suit dans leurs missions essentielles à la vie économique du pays.

My personal impression is that a lot has changed in terms of safety in the last two years. Non-compliance with current legislation that directly affects the safety of pilots is now no longer tolerated by many stakeholders. Something is happening. And that is a good thing.
