State regulators on Friday banned cargo ship pilots from using personal cellphones on Maryland waters. The Maryland Board of Pilots, which oversees cargo ship pilots, approved a rule change 10 months after, and in direct response to, the Ever Forward's weekslong grounding in the Chesapeake Bay. Vessels are required by law to have a trained maritime pilot on board responsible for safely navigating the ship to its desired destination. However, ensuring safe navigation inside dock environments is demanding as mistakes can be extremely costly, time-consuming to correct, and even fatal. An assisting tool working autonomously to support the maritime pilot by predicting possible collisions would lower the risk involved with navigating the vessel.

Footage from faraway countries shows a reality that is incompatible with safety standards set by IMPA, EMPA and other organisations. There is still much to be done to protect the lives of all pilots worldwide.
