Every day, ocean tankers filled with critical resources like iron ore and crude oil pass through the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port as fully-loaded container ships arrive from all over the world. Marine pilots are the first to meet the incoming ships, and the last to see them out. They are tasked to help maneuver the giant vessels through China's busy waterways. Welcome back to the Fluctus Channel for a feature on the important role of tugboats in navigating the bigger vessels in harbors and canal, as well as the open seas.

In December 2020, Australian Pilot Captain Ritesh Bhamaria was expertly piloting oil tanker MT Godam through the Torres Strait in adverse weather conditions when he and the vessel crew sighted a distant hand waving for help in the rough sea.
